Grow Native. Restore Mauritius.
Transform your garden into a haven for wildlife while helping to protect one of the world’s most threatened floras.
At Ebony Forest, we are a non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to restoring Mauritius’ native forests and conserving its unique biodiversity. When you buy plants from us, you’re not just gardening: you’re directly supporting conservation.
Our Native Plant Nursery
Located at our Visitor Centre, our nursery is the only one in Mauritius dedicated exclusively to native and endemic species.
We specialise in plants from dry lowland to upland ecosystems, including rare and threatened species. Our range includes trees, shrubs, palms, climbers, and ground covers - all suited to Mauritian conditions.
We also offer:
- Advice tailored to your region and garden goals
- Discounts for large orders
- Updates via our mailing list on available species

Why Go Native?
Mauritius has one of the most threatened island floras in the world:
- 89% of endemic plant species are at risk of extinction
- Less than 2% of native forest remains
- The island with the third-highest proportion of threatened tree species globally
One of the biggest threats comes from invasive exotic plants, which outcompete and replace native and endemic vegetation.
By choosing native and endemic plants, you become part of the solution, not the problem.
Benefits of Native Plants
Native species are not just better for nature, they’re better for your garden.

Low maintenance
require minimal watering and pruning once established

Climate-adapted
suited to Mauritian soils, rainfall, and temperatures

Cyclone-resilient
naturally adapted to local weather conditions

Evergreen
many species retain their leaves year-round

Biodiversity-friendly
provide food and shelter for native birds, bats, reptiles, insects, and butterflies
Think Twice About Exotics
Many plants commonly sold in nurseries in Mauritius are highly invasive.
Take Lantana camara: popular for its colourful flowers, yet listed among the world’s worst invasive species. It smothers other plants and prevents forest regeneration.
Go native instead, and help protect Mauritius’ natural heritage.
Why We Sell Native Plants
As an NGO, conservation is at the heart of everything we do. By purchasing plants from our nursery, you are directly supporting our work to restore and protect Mauritius’ unique forests.
We also believe that native and endemic plants belong in our gardens and landscapes - not just confined to remnant patches of forest. Too often overlooked in favour of exotic species, our urban areas have become low-biodiversity, low-maintenance spaces with the same generic look. By planting native species, you can help reverse this trend and become part of a wider effort to reconnect people with the natural heritage around them.
We are committed to both conservation and sustainability. That’s why we only sell:
- Excess stock from our nursery
- Species that can be sustainably propagated
Rare and highly threatened species are reserved for our forest restoration projects, where they are most needed to rebuild resilient, functioning ecosystems.
Why Buy From Ebony Forest?
When you purchase from us, you support ethical, science-based conservation. We ensure:
High genetic diversity
Seeds and seedlings are collected on private land from a wide range of parent plants to maintain strong, resilient populations.
Wildlife protection
We leave at least one-third of fruits in the wild to support animals and natural regeneration.
Strong, resilient plants
Our plants are hardened, meaning they are gradually exposed to natural conditions so they establish better in your garden.
Expert advice
Our team is available on weekdays to guide you in selecting the right plants for your needs.
What Species Are Available?
Our stock changes regularly depending on the season.
